We decided to do an eReading app plattform for our bachelor project, because we saw a lot of potential to introduce new features to this field, that could make digital reading much more interesting and fun. During our research we found a lot of badly designed applications, with a lot of missed opportunities which acknowledged us to keep going into this direction and develope something new. We also experience it as challanging to create an interface for digital books, because it needs to be functional yet aestetically appealing. Especially because it displays an activity which we where doing for hundereds of years in a totally different way. In the following sections I would like to explain the core features of the My Shelf app.

Contextual Collection
Lots of people recognize the benefits of digital reading on vacation and on the go because they safe a lot of space in their luggage and it is possible to store a lot of books on a small and portable device. As a touchpoint of our application, we developed location based book collections, which could be displayed in public space. These collections can contain content, that is in relation with their environment, historically or relating to the action. This could also involve books, that are from contemporary historical interest, as you can see in our example Verschwörungstheorien (conspiracy theories).

Shaping Search Results
The challenge of reading a book starts in the very begining with the choice of a new book–title. Most of the existing services are offering a searchbar that allows you to search for an author, genre, title etc. But the way of entering words into a searchbar is a very targeted way of searching. This is why we introduced a system of sliders to My Shelf which will allow you to manipulate your search with filtering options to shape and maipulate the search results in a playful way. the filtering options can be combined with a text entry such as genre, author or a friend and therefore lead to a more specific result.
